Tips for digital print and cut

A clean contour cut starts before the cutter runs. Confirm the printer, ink, media profile and film combination, then test the complete print, finish and cut workflow on the material you will use for production.

Allow for the ink system

For solvent and eco-solvent workflows, follow the ink and media manufacturers’ drying and outgassing instructions before laminating or cutting. Heavy ink coverage and production conditions can change the time needed. A general 24–48-hour waiting period is not a universal drying specification or a guarantee that a print is ready.

Do not apply solvent outgassing guidance automatically to latex or UV printing. Use the curing and finishing requirements for the actual printer and ink system.

Make a test cut before the full run

Check blade condition, blade exposure, force and speed using the cutter’s test procedure. Inspect the cut edge, liner and small details. Film thickness alone does not establish the correct settings, and a setting that worked on another media may need adjustment.

If artwork allows, test a clear border between the printed area and the cut path. Compare edge behavior on the actual design instead of treating one border width as suitable for every job.

Test the finished graphic on its intended surface

Check adhesion and edge condition after printing, finishing and cutting. Prepare the substrate and meet the application-temperature requirements in the selected film’s instructions. Do not use a general temperature threshold in place of product-specific guidance.
