First vs Second Surface in Window Graphics: What’s the Difference?
Posted by DAVID ZHENG

When installing window graphics, you can apply them in two ways — first surface or second surface.
The choice affects both appearance and durability.
First Surface (Outside Application)
Graphics are applied on the exterior side of the glass with adhesive on the back.
Pros:
- Maximum visual impact with no glass glare
- Direct exposure for vibrant colors
Cons:
- Exposed to weather and potential damage
- May be subject to zoning sign restrictions
Second Surface (Inside Application)
Graphics are applied on the interior side of the glass facing outward, with adhesive on the front.
Pros:
- Protected from weather and vandalism
- Typically exempt from exterior sign regulations
Cons:
- Slightly reduced clarity due to glass reflection
Modern Solutions
Advances in printable films make second-surface installs more effective.
By printing mirror artwork (reverse printing) on clear films (like Graphictac Optically Clear removable), graphics appear crisp from the outside while staying protected indoors.
Choosing the Right Method
Select the method based on the installation environment, desired visibility, and durability needs, to ensure the application achieves both visual appeal and long-term performance.
